My bike and all my gear is on board, in just a few minutes I will join them and start the 2-day journey to Addis. There I will join Kendra and the rest of the Tour d’Afrique riders for 10 weeks of riding as we wind our way south and west through Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia. My mind is still reeling from all the last minute gear buying, packing, work and endless logistics, it will take a while for it to sink in that I’m actually (finally!) on my way. Lugging all my gear into the airport a few days ago reminded me of adventure racing.. the race begins long before the gun goes off. All the running around, preparing, planning and decision making is all part of the adventure. Thank you again to everyone who helped make this happen – my family, friends, riding buddies, colleagues and unexpected supporters. I have felt so much love and support from so many directions in the last several months, I am a lucky woman.
Excited, anxious, happy, exhausted, and even a little sad after saying goodbye to my parents (who are so awesome that they drove 4 hours to Orlando to see me off!).. I will miss many of you during my time away, but most of all look forward to sharing stories when I return.
Here’s to the beginning of a grand adventure.. Kendra, here I come!!
